MURAL PAINTING TECHNIQUES: GENERAL INFORMATION
The "Laboratorio per Affresco di Vainella" offers several didactic activities to give artists or art experts, who are carrying out a personal research, practical knowledge of either antique and modern mural painting techniques.The course is also addressed to people who work on the documentation and conservation of mural paintings, as well as to restoration students who want to deepen the study of antique techniques by a didactic method that emphasize practice over theory. The skills acquired will open the way to job opportunities in the field of cultural and historical assets' conservation. Moreover, today's revival in using mural paintings for interior design offers an application of this technique that calls for specific knowledge and experience in the sector.
The"Laboratorio per Affresco di Vainella" opened its courses with the goal of expanding and precising the knowledge of the methods and the materials used in the technique of fresco making through practical application; the nature and the reaction of the artworks, from the simplest to themost complicated alterations, searching for the causes and the measures to avoid them.
Different surfaces will be taken into account during the course, such as: stone walls, brick walls, ect... Practical application will involve buon fresco painting, fresco painting using auxiliary temperas and reelaboration on dry medium, ornaments and gildings. Frescoes previously made will be stripped and moved on less cumbersome supports; autodetaching technique will also be used. Two disused but important techniques will be examined in the courses: glossy stucco and scagliola. Both aim to reproduce the splendor of precious marbles by using different methods and cheap materials.
