The Affresco Laboratory of Vainella: ACTIVITY

The "Laboratorio per Affresco di Vainella" was founded in Prato on the personal initiative of Leonetto Tintori, a leading Italian restorer of 900's, for deeply exploring the secrets of ancient mural painting.Special attention is paid to the nature of the original materials and to the knowledge of the artistic techniques concerning frescos, with a focus on pigments, organic binders, tempera paintings and the lesser-known pictorical variations on the wall. The research is carried out on an experimental basis and runs through the use of purpose-made "pictorial models" according to various analytical types and aims.Over time, an extraordinary pictorial archive, made of hundreds of samples and cromatic combinations, has arisen.By realizing and directly observing the models we can get useful data to deepen the historical, technical and scientific knowledge of ancient mural painting and to stimulate further research and better solutions for the conservation of the entire artistic heritage.
From 1983 Leonetto and Elena Tintori's home-studio becomes a workshop where mural painting techniques are taught.
The attempt of Leonetto was to form restorators with a practical knowledge of fresco technique and to rescue this knowledge applying it to a modern artisitic expression.
