LEONETTO TINTORI: THE ARTIST

A painter, but mainly a valid shape creator, Tintori was a shy and reserved man, reluctant to fashion and cultural social life.

Although his exhibitions were not many, and although his name as a painter may not be particularly known amongst galleries, art dealers and collectors, Leonetto Tintori surely was a significant artist, with well-defined features of a plastic and pictorical narrator, of a researcher and experimenter.

He never liked oil painting, he rather worked with fresco and temperaand used many other techniques in a personal way.
He occupied himself with scagliola: an applied and minor art, for a long time: Tintori trasformed it in an expression of pure personal creativity.
Mosaic's artistic season took him little more than two years, it was a sort of recreational activity that absorbed him completely.
Pastels on paper were his more immediate and beloved pictorical language.

As a sculptor he made many portraits of his wife Elena, his favoured model, and partecipated to regional exhibitions and national art quadriennals before the last world war.
Then he reached a very personal polychrome sculpting style.
He dedicated the last fifteen years of his life to his school “Laboratorio per Affresco Elena e Leonetto Tintori”, first by teaching his students the technique, then by opening a scientific section of his workshop, mainly dedicated to the study of mural painting's ageing process.

In spite of his old age, he always found the way to create pastels or scagliole and to shape the clay he fired in the long existing oven at his house-workshop.The presence of this oven made him think about a ceramic art course.

Tintori left us in the year 2000 and his ashes rest beside those of Elena in the Ark in the Vainella's garden, but his sober and authoritative presence is still alive and is part of the magic of this place: an artist's house-studio immersed in the Tuscan countryside but, according to his wish, an art workshop as well.
